Find the connection points

Photograph the ledger, joist hangers, stairs, posts, roof tie-ins, and any section built around a doorway or bay. Visible fasteners do not reveal every concealed condition.

Check utilities near the wall

Look for outlets, lights, wiring, gas lines, hose connections, and drainage components. Arrange qualified disconnect work where needed before demolition.

Decide who handles the exposed wall

Removing a ledger can reveal damaged sheathing, missing flashing, rot, or unfinished siding. Deck removal and building-envelope repair should be written as separate responsibilities unless both are specifically included.

Protect doors and occupied areas

Plan how doors will be secured once stairs or landing surfaces are removed. Keep people and pets away from openings and the work zone.

Confirm permits and the next use

Tell the building department whether the deck is being removed permanently or replaced. The answer may affect permit, inspection, and temporary safety requirements.
