Photograph the whole structure

Take wide photos of the deck, stairs, railings, supports, and the connection to the house. Add close photos of damaged areas, visible footings, lighting, and anything attached underneath.

Clear the route out

Measure the narrowest gate and note slopes, steps, soft ground, tight turns, and the distance to the driveway. Move furniture, planters, grills, toys, and hoses away from the work path.

Confirm utility status

Identify deck lighting, outlets, gas lines, plumbing, low-voltage wiring, and equipment mounted near the structure. Have the appropriate utility or qualified trade confirm any required disconnect.

Mark what stays

Point out patios, siding, landscaping, fences, retaining features, and footings that should remain. Put the desired finish condition in writing.

Check the local requirement

Ask the municipal building department whether removal, footings, or a replacement deck needs a permit or inspection before work starts.
