Start with practical material groups
Create separate areas for wood, composite boards, metal hardware, bagged small debris, and anything that needs special handling. Keep piles stable and clear of sidewalks and drainage paths.
Handle old boards carefully
Deck boards may contain protruding nails, screws, splinters, coatings, or preservatives. Do not burn treated lumber. Confirm the accepted disposal route before loading.
Keep questionable material out
Set aside paint, solvents, batteries, pressurized cylinders, suspected asbestos-containing material, and unknown chemicals. Ask the responsible authority or disposal facility how each item should be handled.
Make the pile loadable
Stack manageable lengths, turn sharp ends inward, and leave enough room for workers to approach the pile. Keep heavy framing separate from loose sweepings.
Photograph the full load
Wide photos show volume; close photos show material and fasteners. Include the route from the pile to the driveway and the narrowest access point.
